Boston musician fuses Ethiopian rhythms with electronic soundscapes

D.A. Mekonnen, a Boston-based musician, has launched a new project called “dragonchild,” showcasing his ability to blend Ethiopian rhythms with electronic soundscapes. Mekonnen, the saxophonist and composer behind the project, released his debut album as dragonchild last year, following his extensive experience leading the Ethiopian funk outfit Debo Band.
Collaborating with various musicians for “dragonchild,” Mekonnen teamed up with sound producers Christopher Cook and claire rousay to create ambient tracks “Incantation” and “Meditation”. Additionally, Mekonnen formed a duo with Indian American drummer and electronic composer Ravish Momin, who performs as Sunken Cages. The duo has been touring internationally, with performances in #New_York City, Knoxville, Tennessee, and Washington, D.C.
Focusing primarily on the saxophone for this project, Mekonnen allows his collaborators the freedom to interpret and deliver his musical direction. He has also created a unique listening experience featuring an eight-channel mix of his composition “Meditation,” called “Black,” released on four vinyl records designed to be played simultaneously.
Mekonnen embraces his cultural heritage and its influence on his work, drawing inspiration from his Ethiopian roots and the healing tradition of Zār practiced by his grandparents.
