#Ethiopia: Tigrayan opposition party calls for an end to inflammatory rhetoric, citing concerns over peace agreement

Salsay Weyane Tigray, a political party in the #Tigray region, has called for the cessation of what they describe as “hostile propaganda” targeting the people of Tigray, citing concerns that it could jeopardize the region’s fragile peace process. In a statement released today, the party expressed “deep concerns” that certain broadcasts and statements are undermining the principles of the cessation of hostilities agreement.
The party points to the agreement’s prohibition against disseminating hostile propaganda, yet notes a resurfacing of speeches on state media outlets that they claim incite hostility towards Tigrayans. They also highlight statements that are “collectively incriminating” the people of Tigray and oppose the return of displaced persons.
Of particular concern was a comment from the head of the Ethiopian Communication Affairs Service, which, according to the party, characterized demands for implementing the peace deal as “belligerent.” The Salsay Weyane statement said this appears to contradict “the Ethiopian government’s commitment to implementing the agreement under international observation.”
The party called for “the immediate cessation of all actions that could jeopardize the peace process” and urged the government to intervene, calling on the international community “to pay close attention to these recent developments that threaten relapse into hostilities.”
